would / had rather...than译为"宁愿......

He would rather he the all one than the large one.

I'd rather take the slowest train than go there by air.

I would rather not l you the secret right now.

I would / had rather you ted the letter right away,

I would / had rather that she had stayed at home.

He worked till late last night, or rather, early in the morning.

The building is like a palace, or rather a temple.

You've done rather well.

The way he is living is rather strange to me.

They were getting along fairly well with each other.

He was quite polite, but he wasn't ready to me.

There's soming rather strange about the way he talks to you.

Twenty-five is pretty old to take up ballet dancing.

That is quite / rather a surprising result. =That is a quite / rather surprising result.

I rather / quite like to go for a walk after supper.

This comr is rather more expensive than that one.

This book is rather too difficult for the beginners.

I'd prefer to go in August rather than July.

I'd call her hair chestnut rather than brown.

We ought to invest in new machines rather than buildings.

rather和贬义词连用,有时也可以和某些褒义词连用如:good,clr,well,pretty,此时表示“very”。

rather用在比较级前,意为a little或slightly它可以和too连用也可以放在不定冠词a(an)的前后均可。

rather than和more...than的比较:前者表示“与其…… 比起……”,注意词组more...than中的than前面不可以加上rather。

He depends on yoather than on me.

He depends more on you than on me.

在rather加形容词再加名词的结构中,冠词a置于rather前后都可以,如a rather big dog和rather a big dog(一只相当大的狗)两种表达都可以;

I had rather stay with John than with Charles.

I would/had rather you paid me now.

had/would rather后还可接than,再加不含to的不定式,还要注意would rather后只可接动词原形。

I would rather stay here than go on holiday.

prefer to...rather than...

I prefer to work rather than remian idle.

Fairly

“How was the film?”

“Fairly good. Not the best one I’ve seen this year.”

“How was the film?”

“Quite good. You ought to go.”

“How was the film?”

“Rather good. I was surprised.”

“How’s things?”

“Pretty good. You OK?”

1) 只用于修饰比较级的:much;still;n

2) 既可以修饰比较级又可以修饰原级的:a little; a bit; rather 等

修饰形容词,副词比较级的常用修饰词有:no,a little,a bit,much,n,still,a lot,a great deal,far,by far,rather,any等.

He is no richer than Peter.

He is as poor as Peter.

表示前者比后者强一点时,通常采用a little,a bit等.

例如:The room is a bit larger than that one.

He works still harder than r.=He works harder still than r. 表示前者在某方面远远地超过对方时,通常采用far,by far,a lot,a great deal等.

例如:Matters are a lot better than r before.

He can't jump any higher.

Can he jump any higher?

If you can jump any higher,I will give you a prize.

副词修饰原级的就是very,a little; a bit; rather ,pretty,quite,fairly,so,too.
